At The Alan Kurlander Group, we live and breathe Monmouth County. We are not just real estate professionals, we are neighbors who are deeply connected to the unique character of our community. While we are usually opening doors to the area’s most stunning homes, we also take pride in uncovering the hidden histories and quiet corners that make our county truly one of a kind. Whether you have lived here for a lifetime or are just beginning your journey in Central New Jersey, there are still places right in our backyard that tell a story you might have missed.
Here are five of our favorite notable landmarks that prove there is always something new to discover in our own backyard.
1. Historic Walnford (Upper Freehold)
A literal 18th-century village frozen in time. This was the "Wall Street" of early Monmouth County. It features a massive, fully functional gristmill that still turns today, showing off the industrial power that built our region before the modern era took over.
2. Deep Cut Gardens (Middletown)
An Italian-style estate hidden in the hills of Middletown. Beyond the 54 acres of greenhouses and koi ponds, this was once the private sanctuary of mob boss Vito Genovese. It is the most elegant "secret" in the county, offering a high-end estate experience that is completely free to the public.
3. Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook (Atlantic Highlands)
The ultimate "top of the world" perspective. You're standing at the highest point on the Atlantic seaboard from Maine to Mexico. It offers a unique view of the shipping lanes and NYC skyline that reminds you just how unique our coastal geography really is.

4. InfoAge Science & History Museum (Wall Township)
A sprawling, top-secret military installation turned tech playground. This is the birthplace of the Space Age. In 1946, scientists here were the first to bounce a radio signal off the moon. It is our local "Area 51" and houses everything from vintage computers to secret Cold War tech.
5. Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area (Manasquan)
The last "wild" beach on the Manasquan Inlet. It is the very last undeveloped tract of land on the inlet. While the rest of the shore is boardwalks and condos, this spot looks exactly like the Jersey Shore did hundreds of years ago. It is a rare, raw look at our natural coastline.
