As the temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, the magic of the holiday season begins to unfold across the Garden State. During the holidays, New Jersey's diversity shines through in spectacular, unique local traditions, small and large. From charming towns completely transformed into scenes out of a book, to massive venues dazzling with millions of twinkling lights, the state becomes a true winter wonderland. Today, we're highlighting three fantastic New Jersey destinations and we would love to hear your thoughts about your favorite holiday experiences around our state.

The Polar Express in Phillipsburg đźš‚
The charming town of Phillipsburg, NJ in Warren County completely transforms its historic railway into a scene straight out of the holiday classic, “The Polar Express” with the unique The Polar Express Train Ride. Departing from the Delaware River Railroad Excursions, this immersive experience brings the classic book and movie to life as passengers, often dressed in pajamas, journey to the "North Pole." The train ride features singing and dancing chefs, hot chocolate, cookies, a reading of the story, and a special visit from Santa Claus himself, to present each child with the first gift of Christmas, none other than a silver bell. The only thing missing is an animated Tom Hanks.

Historic Smithville Christmas Village 🎄
The Historic Smithville Christmas Village offers a truly magical visual experience centered around its renowned Light Show on the Lake. Every evening in December, between 5:30-8:30, over 50,000 dazzling lights on more than 120 floating Christmas trees in Lake Meone are synchronized to holiday music, creating an awe-inspiring reflection on the water's surface. This free, daily spectacle turns the charming village, with its colonial-style buildings and unique shops, into a twinkling lakeside wonderland that truly brings out the holiday spirit in everyone, even the Grinch.

PNC Bank Arts Center Light Show đź’ˇ
For a contemporary and grand-scale holiday attraction here in Monmouth County, the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel converts its massive entertainment grounds into the Magic of Lights drive-through spectacular. This spectacular transformation features a 2.5-mile driving path lined with millions of LED lights, enormous themed displays, and captivating digital animations like the popular tunnel of lights. Guests enjoy the entire show from the warmth and comfort of their own car while listening to a holiday soundtrack perfect to get everyone ready to see the man with the bag!

These three unique experiences are just a small snapshot of the holiday spirit alive in New Jersey. However, the season of celebration is vast, and the Garden State honors many traditions beyond the grand Christmas displays. Throughout December and January, our communities host beautiful public events, from the warm glow of community Menorah Lighting ceremonies marking the eight nights of Hanukkah, to vibrant local gatherings celebrating the seven principles of Kwanzaa. No matter your tradition, there are countless ways to find light, joy, and community here in the winter months.Â
We hope this guide inspires you to explore all the magical holiday transformations New Jersey has to offer. If you need any help finding the right experience for you and your loved ones, let us know! Whether you are riding The Polar Express or enjoying a twinkling light display, we at The Alan Kurlander Group and Coldwell Banker Realty wish you and yours a season filled with warmth, joy, and wonderful memories.
